Family history research service

In 1856, Queensland started compulsory registration of life events. We hold records of life events (births, deaths and marriages) that took place in Queensland between 1829 and present day. Historical records are:

  • births that took place more than 100 years ago
  • marriages that took place more than 75 years ago
  • deaths that occurred more than 30 years ago.

It is free to search historical records online. You can then buy an:

  1. Search by the name of a person

For a marriage search, enter the name(s) of one of the parties
    • If you're seeing too many results, you can narrow down your search results: (Tip: You can refine your date ranges within these options)
    • Results are sorted by closest match to the person’s name and then by parents’ names (for births and deaths) or by other party’s name (for marriages).

Quick tips

If you are having trouble finding a record:

  • check if the person was known by another name—for example, if they were known by a nickname but registered under a formal name or changed their name
  • check corresponding documentation. If you are looking for a person's marriage, their death certificate might provide more clues
  • remember that marriage last name searches are not specific to either party. Searches using a person's last name will return records of either party with that last name.
